Sin City. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, fortunes won and lost, glitz and glamour. These are just a few of the images and quotations that come to mind when one hears “Las Vegas”. And, yes, the Strip and the hotels that made Vegas famous are tourist attractions of the highest order. But there is much else to see in Las Vegas – you’d be surprised how many natural attractions are within a just a short drive! In keeping with Las Vegas’ “anything goes”, vibe we’ve put together a fun list of some “fun and funky” attraction for you to experience off the beaten track.
The Great Outdoors
Grand Canyon
This majestic landmark needs no introduction. This incredible wonder of nature has been a beloved destination for decades. Did you know that the Grand Canyon is only about a four hour drive from Las Vegas? Leave after breakfast and you might just make it in time for lunch!
Lake Mead
Lake Mead NRA offers year-round recreational fun such as boating, fishing, hiking, photography, and sightseeing. It is also home to thousands of desert plants and animals which have all adapted to surviving in a desert atmosphere.
Hoover Dam
Named one of the Top 10 Construction Achievements of the 20th Century, Hoover Dam continues to draw crowds 80 years after its creation. More than a million visitors per year make their way to Black Canyon, just outside of Las Vegas, to marvel at the highest concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere. It stands at more than 725 feet above the Colorado River. The Hoover Dam is also a National Historic Landmark.
Funky Museums
Pinball Museum
The Pinball Hall of Fame contains and displays the world’s largest collection pinball machines, which all belong to one person! All machines are available to play, so you can take a stroll down Memory Lane and bring back your childhood days at the neighborhood arcade.
Neon Sign Museum
The Neon Museum is dedicated to collecting and exhibiting iconic Las Vegas signs for the fun and education of all. The Neon Museum campus includes several other funky and interesting exhibits and signs explaining the history of each of the signs.
The Hollywood Car Museum
The Hollywood Cars Museum is 30,000 square feet of the world’s most famous movie cars. You’ll see stars like the DeLorean from “Back to the Future,” Herbie the Love Bug, five James Bond vehicles including the Lotus Esprit submarine car (1977), the pink Hudson Hornet from “Porky’s,” a 1965 Mercedes Benz 220SE from the movie “The Hangover,” and so many more.
Fun Outside Around Town
First Friday art
Monthly art celebration featuring the work of more than 100 local artists, including painting, ceramics, mixed media, photography, jewelry, textile arts and sculpture.
Fremont Street Experience
Located in downtown Las Vegas, the Fremont Street Experience offer a seemingly endless supply of things to do in this iconic town. Here are a few crowd favorites: The SlotZilla Zip Line, Rub Happy Buddha’s Belly and the Mob Museum. Have fun!
Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Garden at the Springs Preserve is home to the largest collection of Mojave Desert cacti and succulent plants, featuring 110 acres of display gardens, natural gardens, and wildlife habitats.
